Pulmonary Medicine Update Series is proud to host an internationally recognized faculty presenting the latest knowledge in Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine.
The 9th Pulmonary Medicine Update Course is scheduled on 4-5 February, 2009 at New Kasr El-Eini Specialized Hospital, Cairo University.

Professor Laurent Brochard, Hopital Henri Mondor, France
Laurent Brochard is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Henri Mondor teaching hospital, University of Paris 12, France. After having been Vice-Dean of the Medical School, he is currently Medical Director of the Hospital. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine, from 2001 to 2007. Since 1987, he has published more than 220 peer-reviewed articles in the field of acute respiratory failure and mechanical ventilation, in the highest ranked journals of medicine, respiratory and critical care medicine including New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet, etc. He has run mutiple clinical trials, in particular concerning weaning from mechanical ventilation, noninvasive ventilation or treatment of the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Professor Andres Esteban, Getafe University, Madrid, Spain
Dr. Andres Esteban is Director of Critical Care & Burn Medicine in Getafe University Hospital , associated with the European University . He is also Director of Research in the same hospital. He has had a long experience in the management of general critically ill and burned patients. He has also worked over many years in experimental and clinical research. He has championed a network for the study of ARDS, and is presently part of a nationwide network for the study of respiratory disease. He has published more than 120 original articles in peer-reviewed journals, being some of them landmark articles on weaning, ARDS and epidemiology of mechanical ventilation. He has also authored several Critical Care Medicine books, some of them translated into several languages , as well as numerous book chapters in both Spanish and English.

Professor Niall Ferguson, University of Toronto, Canada

Dr. Ferguson is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and Research Director for Critical Care at the University Health Network. He received his MD with honours from the University of Toronto in 1995, and went on to training in Internal Medicine, Respirology, and Critical Care Medicine, and an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology in 2002. Dr. Ferguson receives research funding from local, provincial, and national agencies, and is currently supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research RCT mentoring award. His current research interests include:

(1) mechanical ventilation (epidemiology; extubation and tracheostomy)

(2) ARDS (definitions; ventilation; trial design)

(3) HFO

(4) consent processes for research.
